Independent Non-Executive Director

Remuneration: This is a voluntary position. Reasonable travel and out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed. 

About the Role 

SU Australia Benevolent Services Limited is seeking an Independent Non-Executive Director to join its newly established Board. As a registered charity and Public Benevolent Institution (PBI), the organisation delivers targeted relief, social support, and welfare programs to vulnerable children, young people, and families across Australia. 

This role offers a meaningful opportunity to provide strategic leadership, financial oversight, and governance excellence while protecting the organisation’s mission, regulatory compliance, and beneficiary welfare.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Strategic Leadership: Provide objective oversight, monitor strategic targets, and uphold the entity’s benevolent purpose.

  • Compliance & Risk Stewardship: Maintain compliance with ACNC Governance Standards, ATO PBI frameworks, and the Corporations Act 2001.

  • Child Safety & Safeguarding: Oversee robust child safety, protection, and risk management mechanisms across all operations.

  • Financial Oversight: Ensure strong financial stewardship, solvency monitoring, and proper oversight of DGR funds and tax concessions. 

Selection Criteria 

  • Governance Experience: Background as a Non-Executive Director in the NFP, charitable, or community services sector (AICD or equivalent qualifications highly regarded).

  • Independence: Must meet independent director requirements (no current employment, material relationship with, or commercial/family ties to Scripture Union Service Limited and any of its subsidiaries).

  • Domain Expertise: Expertise in one or more key areas: Benevolent/Social Welfare Services, Charity Law & Regulatory Compliance, or NFP Finance, Audit & Risk.

  • Values Alignment: A strong personal commitment to the foundational Christian values, vision, and mission of the Scripture Union movement. 

Time Commitment & Requirements 

  • Expectation: 4 – 8 hours per month, including 4 – 6 board meetings per year.

  • Clearances: Successful candidates must pass a National Police Check, Working with Children Check (WWCC), and standard statutory director background checks prior to appointment (e.g. must have a Director ID).
