Background

Christian Heritage College (CHC) was established in 1986 by the Christian Outreach Centre, now known as International Network of Churches (INC), because of its vision for higher education in Australia. From small beginnings, CHC has gained recognition as a provider of standing in the Australian higher education sector. 

CHC offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Ministries and Social Sciences which contain a unique combination of personal growth and professional academic studies within a Christian worldview. CHC is a place where lives are transformed, and people are equipped to have influence on the world around them.

The School of Education and Humanities offers accredited undergraduate and postgraduate university-level courses. Students are regarded as novice teachers and

curriculum design focuses on the formation of the whole person in the professional contexts of primary and secondary education. The ethos of CHC is scholarly focused and supports truth seeking and community. 

 

Key Objectives

The role of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the School of Education and Humanities at CHC involves the development and delivery of specific units (subjects) and may include coordinating one or more lecturers where the delivery of units involves a team. All academic staff must engage in scholarship related to their area(s) of specialisation and are expected to engage with colleagues in school-based and/or CHC-wide committees. A Senior Lecturer provides leadership in course development and scholarship, the latter including research publications.

The incumbent may be appointed to the role of Course Coordinator for a fixed, renewable term, in which case a reduction in baseline workload will be negotiated.

 

Scope of Position

Within the organisational structure of CHC, the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will report directly to the Dean, School of Education and Humanities and will work closely with Course Coordinators. The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will consult with academic staff from other schools at CHC and with administration staff, particularly staff in Registry.

 

Key Responsibilities

The primary objectives of the position are:

  • Development and delivery of units assigned by the Dean.
  • Engaging students in learning
  • Undertaking scholarship, including research that leads to reportable publications.
  • Contribute to the CHC community through active membership of School-based and CHC-wide committees.

 

Teaching

  • Preparation and delivery of class sessions (lectures and tutorials) in accordance with approved unit outlines, including development of learning resources for CHC’s online learning management system.
  • Preparation and marking of assessment items in accordance with approved unit outlines.
  • Managing student enquiries.
  • Sharing relevant expertise with colleagues.
  • (Senior Lecturer) Providing leadership in curricula development and delivery.

 

Course or Year Coordination

If the incumbent is appointed to the role of Course Coordinator:

  • Connect with and guide students towards successful engagement with their studies, with reference to –

    • Academic support
    • Unit selection, course transfers, leave of absence, withdrawal, and extension approvals.
    • Referral to academic writing support, counselling, or other specific services within CHC as needed.

  • (Course Coordinator) Support academic staff in the design and delivery of units in accordance with approved unit outlines
  • (Course Coordinator) Advise the Dean on allocation of the relevant units among permanent and sessional staff.
  • (Course Coordinator) Advise the Dean and School Board of Studies on curriculum matters.

 

General

  • Actively contributing to school-based and CHC-wide committees, including the School Board of
  • Studies
  • (Senior Lecturer) Actively contributing to at least one CHC-wide committee.
  • (Senior Lecturer) Consulting with employer groups and the Queensland College of Teachers

 

Scholarship and Research

  • Keeping up to date with theoretical and empirical research in area(s) of expertise
  • Publishing scholarly articles in professional periodicals and academic journals, including
  • reportable publications
  • (Senior Lecturer) Undertaking research that leads to reportable publications.
  • (Senior Lecturer) Providing leadership in research.

Use of Equipment

During the performance of duties, the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will encounter and is expected to operate the following:

  • Personal computers and Microsoft Office
  • Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, and other Web Browsers
  • Office equipment e.g., printers, photocopiers, Electronic Whiteboards, data projectors etc.
  • Various other software packages as required, including Moodle™, Turnitin and Flex software.

Specific training in the above will provided, as required.

 

Selection Criteria

Qualifications and experience

  • A relevant Master’s degree (Academic B) or Doctorate (preferred for Academic C).
  • Registration (or eligibility for registration) as a teacher in Queensland.

 

Essential

  • Demonstrated capacity to prepare and deliver curricula within a higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated capacity to engage students in their learning.
  • History of, or evidence of potential for scholarly output, including reportable research publications
  • (Senior Lecturer) Superior organisational skills demonstrated by appointment to a senior level in a school, university, or other education-related institution.
  • (Senior Lecturer) Demonstrated capacity to lead others in scholarly activity.
  • Proven planning, organisational and time management skills.
  • Experience in teaching in a university, or Private Higher Education Provider.
