Board members make an extremely valuable contribution to the organisations they serve, and their job is only getting harder. There are some similarities between working with boards, and working with staff, and one of those similarities is the usefulness of a Job Description. We all know that staff should have a Job Description, but board members also need one! It helps them understand what is expected, but it also, like with staff, provides a tool for helping when challenges arise. With board members, they have both a group role, and an individual role - so they really need a two-part job description. This document contains four short samples: "The Role of the Board - Collectively", "The Role of Board Directors - Individually", "The Role of the Chair", and a 'Board Members' Code of Conduct".
