More and more Christian organisations are realising the strategic value of investing in Board Training. Professional Development is no longer just for paid personnel: the laws are tightening, the tolerance of mistakes is disappearing, and the buck ultimately stops in the boardroom.
But governance not just about compliance!

Those in the boardroom have more opportunity than anyone else to steer the ministry towards its mission! It's a tremendous privilege, but weak governance can seriously hamper your efforts to achieve something for God's kingdom.

Invest just one day in preparing your board for the year ahead! Learn what you need to know about governance, and how to build an effective board, from experts who work in and understand the nuances of the Christian sector.
When? 18 September 2019, 9.15am to 4.45pm

Plenary Program - Part 1
Dr Gary Hoag, CEO and President of Global Trust Partners, has recently released his book 'The Council', which explores the four Councils in Scripture as examples of how we should (and shouldn't!) approach ministry governance today. All around the world, ministry boards are using the fresh, biblical insights from 'The Council' to reframe their thinking about governance. Gary will be leading an opening and a closing plenary presentation in Melbourne.

Plenary Program - Part 2
Hypothetical! Capital Campaign turns into Capital Disaster - and the Senior Pastor is feeling the heat when the disaster lands with short notice on the board table. If you were on the board, what would YOU do??

Steve Kerr, Executive Director of the CMA Standards Council, will again lead a hypothetical discussion between experienced panel members role-playing how a Christ-focused and competent board would address a hypothetical but realistic scenario.

Plenary Program - Part 3
Bring along your governance questions, and towards the end of the day, a panel with real-world experience will tackle whatever issues are nagging, concerning or haunting you!
Elective Program - The Essentials
Each year, CMA's Governance Conference includes an elective stream called 'The Essentials'. This stream comprises four electives, specifically designed for new board members, or those who need a refresher or update on ministry governance basics.
Fundamentals of Ministry Governance (Gary Williams, CMA National Director)
Identifying and Managing the Risks Your Church or Ministry Faces (Steve Kerr, Executive Director, CMA Standards Council)
Understanding Church and NFP Financials, and the Audit / Review Cycle (rdl Accountants)
Understanding Directors' Duties and your ACNC Obligations (Keith Hanslow, Millens Lawyers)

Elective Program - Digging Deeper
'Digging Deeper' is a stream of four electives, running in parallel with 'The Essentials' stream. These electives cover other governance topics that are important for board members to be across, without dwelling on just the basics.
Executive Recruiting: tips and insights on to how to attract and recruit your next CEO (Linton Deane, Eagle HR)
Creating a Strategic Thinking Board: Possible or Painful? (Dr Ruth Knight, Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies)
Tax Obligations – Director Liabilities, Risks & Opportunities (Murray Nicholls and Cathy Braun, Saward Dawson Chartered Accountants)
Governance and Management – A dialogue about the divide (Seak-King Huang and Alex Milner, Prolegis Lawyers)
