POSITION DESCRIPTION – VOLUNTEER HONORARY TREASURER

About Zambia’s Child

Zambia’s Child (ZC) is a non-denominational Christian organisation based in St Ives, NSW. The mission of ZC is to help alleviate poverty in Zambia, primarily through quality, Christian education.  ZC has sponsorship programs for around 235 primary school students in Chingola, a large town in the Copperbelt Province, and 26 secondary school students in Kitwe, about an hour’s drive south of Chingola.  ZC currently has 8 sponsored tertiary students and 16 staff, including a principal, teachers, a social worker, and agriculturalist and other support staff.

In 2013 ZC acquired 2.5 hectares of land to build the Ipalo Christian Community School on the outskirts of Chingola. The first stage of construction was completed in September 2015 with our 90 students commencing Term 3 in the purpose-built school. Stage 2 construction was completed in early 2018. Stages 3 & 4 were completed in 2019.

All fundraising and administrative activities are coordinated from the St Ives office.  All work done in Australia for ZC is conducted by volunteers in order that the funds raised can be devoted to the children’s programs in Zambia.

The Role

ZC is seeking a qualified accountant to take on the role of Treasurer for Zambia’s Child in Sydney.  The broad functions of the role include:

·       Financial accounting for three entities:

o   ZC Australia

o   ZC Development Project – Anglican Aid

o   ZC Zambia

·       Management reporting – budgeting, consolidations, analysis and reporting to Australian Committee

·       Statutory reporting – ZC Australia and ZC Zambia

·       Cashflow management

·       Financial analysis and support

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate is:

·       a strong Christian, active within their church

·       a qualified accountant

·       experienced with Quickbooks, Xero or other cloud-based accounting system

·       proficient with Excel

·       Full training can be provided by the current incumbent

General Responsibilities of A Committee Member

·       Attending monthly Committee meetings as a full committee member and presenting and commenting on Financial Reports.  These meeting are generally (Pre-Covid-19) held at our registered office at St Ives on the 3rd or 4th Monday of the month but lately at St Peters Anglican Church East Lindfield and also on Zoom commencing at 7pm (if you are unable to attend meetings in person, there are always other options).

·       Being prepared to sign the Zambia’s Child Basis of Belief and by paying a $10 joining fee and $10 per annum for member fees of the Association.

Visiting the Project

·       Most of our Committee Members have travelled to visit the ministry in northern Zambia and to meet the people on the ground.  Although it is not a prerequisite for the role, we do find that people coming home from such visits find a new vigour and vision for the ministry.

·       It would be helpful for our Honorary Treasurer to connect with our accounts workers in Zambia, especially our Swiss consultant accountant and our trainee accountant employed by the school, Chiluba Meki.

·       A trip to Zambia comes at a personal cost of about $5,500 which would cover approximately two weeks of travel, accommodation and food. Usually a visit involves travelling with other members of a team who would be doing a variety of activities including some teaching the PTC to local pastors and lay people and others working in support roles in and around the school and community, which is a great encouragement to the staff, students and parents at the school.
