Job Description


This job description outlines the key accountabilities of, and output required from, the post holder. It is not a definitive list and the role may well change and evolve over time.


This position is full time 5 days per week


Department: Fundraising and Marketing Team

Location: Level 1 451 Hunter Street, Newcastle NSW

Reports to: Fundraising and Marketing Director

Direct Reports: Communications Assistant

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a national non-profit organisation that is working through the local church to release Australian families from a life sentence of debt, poverty and its causes. The Communications Manager plays a vital role in communicating CAP’s vision, progress and ongoing need to supporters, churches, and media – as well as acting as Brand Manager and copy developer for all of CAP’s internal teams and the materials they produce.

Additionally, the Communications Manager is responsible for generating one-off income via trust applications, direct mail appeals and email direct marketing.



The person in this role will be an overall CAP champion – someone who can jump into the role and became familiar with both how the organisation works as well as each team’s role and individual communications needs. The Communications Manager guides the direction on internal communication and leads external communication –with media, supporters, fundraising initiatives, exhibitions and more. The role includes a heavy mix of strategic planning/thinking, creative development, project management, team management and writing, among other daily tasks.



You will be passionate about communicating CAP’s vision to serve the poor, save the lost, with the Church, across the nation. You are passionate about storytelling and the use of media to inspire others to get involved. You are passionate about keeping a strong CAP brand and effectively marketing the different ministries CAP has to offer the Church.

The Communications Manager is responsible for overseeing the internal and external communications of the charity.



·       Create and write 4-6 supporter mailings per year, with the goal of achieving the response rate and financial income outlined in the Strategic Plan set each year.

·       Manage all internal projects from initial concept to completion – this can include, but is not limited to: strategic brainstorm session, content writing, oversight of external graphic design work, review and editing, and final print productions.

·       Communicate all design and print briefs to external providers and work with designers to ensure projects are running on schedule and print jobs will be delivered on time.

·       Oversee brand management, ensuring that all materials and communications are on message (including look and feel).

·       Reviewing trusts and grants and advising on applications and assisting with the development of these.

·       Produce yearly client films (as needed) and work with the Core Team to set strategy and budget for their filming needs.

·       Strategically manage all CAP digital media, including emails to supporters, the CAP website and Facebook page.

·       Interview clients for stories, film and fundraising dinner live interviews

·       Learn to work within FAITH, the supporter database, in order to pull reports and lists for scheduled mailings and e-shots.


Other responsibilities include

·       To be a key leader within the charity, leading staff through faith and finance challenges, inputting into the culture and being a role model to all staff.

·       To encourage family, friends and other contacts to support the charity through the Life Changer program and other fundraising initiatives.

·       To pray with other members of staff and clients over the phone if appropriate.

·       To have the flexibility to take on any other responsibilities necessary for the ongoing development of the charity.


Measurable outputs:

·       All Direct Mail and emails produced and sent out as per the year plan, with the Direct Mail achieving the targets set for it.

·       Trust and Grant income generated from trust and grant applications.

·       Communication pieces produced in a professional and timely manner for each team.

·       Website and Facebook kept up-to-date, according to Communications Plan.

·       Successful execution of strategic plan, as set out when the role begins.

Person Specification


Knowledge & Qualifications:

·       Degree qualified in Communications and/or Marketing or equivalent industry experience

·       Computer literacy with the ability to learn systems quickly

·       Computer literate - confident user of Microsoft Office and internet




·       3+ years writing experience across a variety of channels (portfolio made available on request)

·       Prior work with external service providers (graphic designers, film crews) with a proven ability to project manage and maintain strong relationships

·       Proven ability to interview clients/subjects for a story and write a compelling piece


·       Experience writing within a fundraising environment, or proven knowledge of fundraising fundamentals



·       A clear, confident communicator who actively builds relationships and consistently seeks the best for CAP both internally and externally

·       An ‘ideas’ person with a keen attention to detail, one who can problem-solve and offer solutions to a variety of communication pieces

·       A creative thinker who can craft messages for different audiences

·       A people-person, who can work effectively within a team environment

·       A master project manager who can prioritise workload efficiently and manage time effectively

·       The candidate must be able to give both verbal assent to and practical demonstration of Christians Against Poverty’s Statement of Faith and Core Values

·       Must be able to actively participate in prayer and worship, whether individual, small group or corporately, as an expression of own personal faith and in line with CAP’s Statement of Faith



·       Must have flexibility to be able to attend residential staff conferences

·       Comfortable in a “charismatic” Christian environment
