Job Description


This job description outlines the key accountabilities of, and output required from, the post holder. It is not a definitive list and the role may well change and evolve over time.

This position is full time 5 days per week


Department: Fundraising and Marketing

Location: Level 1 451 Hunter Street Newcastle NSW

Reports to: CEO

Direct Reports: Supporter Relations Co-ordinator, Fundraising Events and Project Manager, Fundraising Operations Manager (currently known internally as RDI Manager), Communications and Marketing Assistant and external contractors.

Salary: Negotiable

Other Benefits:      Holiday – 5 weeks per year (Jan – Dec)

Various paid Revive Days (away days) throughout the year



Christians Against Poverty aims to serve the poor, save the lost, with the Church, across the nation. Our Fundraising and Marketing department is responsible for raising funds through the development of our regular givers programme (Life Changers) and growth of our major donor programme. Inspiring them to give and act to show those living under the weight of debt and poverty that there is always hope. We shout about how God is using The Church and CAP together to change lives through inspiring and clear communication in all its forms. We are driven to provide the finance, partnerships and profile needed to fulfil CAP’s vision.



To provide strategic leadership and oversight to the Fundraising and Marketing department with the purpose of generating funds for an ever-expanding Christian ministry. Providing clear vision and direction to all team members and external contractors allowing us to deliver operationally in the current year with a view to our future growth and expansion.

The Fundraising and Marketing Director is responsible for increasing income, awareness, support and partners of CAP through compelling sales and marketing campaigns in all their forms. They also hold responsibility for brand, messaging and speaking up on behalf of our clients through press and media.  

The Director of Fundraising and Marketing is also a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

·       Provide strategic and inspirational leadership for the Fundraising and Marketing team.

·       Lead on high-level strategic planning as well as operational implementation of key fundraising opportunities - including but not limited to:

o   One-off/direct response giving (including digital marketing)

o   Monthly/regular giving (“Life Changers” and “Vision Sponsors” programs)

o   Mid-level and major donor development (including trusts and grants, large donors)

o   Capital campaign fundraising (including events and appeals)

o   Legacy giving

·       Management and oversight of the Fundraising and Marketing department and external contractors ensuring strategic goals are both set and achieved.  

·       Ensure cohesive working between the sub-departments of supporter engagement, fundraising, communications, marketing and external contractors.

·       Ensure CAP’s reputation in the industry is highly regarded.

·       Hold high level, significant charity relationships for the benefit of raising funds.

·       Responsible for budget management and budget control including making well informed return on investment decisions.

·       Longer term strategic thought and action with regards CAP’s long-term fundraising strategy, seeking to develop new streams of income.

·       Responsible for hiring, induction and training of new staff within the Fundraising and Marketing teams.

·       Ensure the CAP brand reflects the organisations mission and values well and is held in high regard.

·       Ensure CAP is well prepared for mitigating any serious PR or reputational incident.

·       Ensuring CAP’s fundraising is actioned in line with the ACNC guidelines and recommendations.

·       Responsible for working with CAP International on matters of brand and consistency.


Senior Leadership Team

·       Provide charity wide leadership as and when required

·       Be a leader in CAP’s cultural values

·       Provide input into key strategic decisions for the charity

·       Work effectively with other Directors to ensure the overall charity strategy is achieved


Measurable Outputs:

·       Meeting the targets under the Fundraising and Marketing aspects of the strategic plan inclusive of, but not exclusive to:

o   Income targets

§  Life Changer

§  One-off

o   Key Brand and marketing metrics

§  Media hits

§  Website hits

§  Social Media growth

o   Key Donor satisfaction indicators:

§  Increased giving

§  Decreased attrition

§  Increased engagement

o   Trust and Grant applications

§  Number of successful applications made


Other responsibilities include

·       Being willing to pray with staff

·       To encourage friends, family and other contacts to support the charity through the Life Changer program, and other fundraising initiatives.





·       Degree level or equivalent experience




·       A passion for Christian ministry – equipping the Australian Church in community building, local justice and evangelism 

·       5+ years of experience in the fundraising sector

·       5+ years of experience in not-for-profit/for-purpose organisation

·       An entrepreneurial and growth mindset with a proactive approach and enthusiasm to problem identification and solving

·       Demonstrated ability to build and deepen meaningful relationships with external stakeholders, particularly donors

·       Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

·       Ability to communicate results, key learnings, and areas of opportunities.

·       Exceptional research skills with an ability to distil complex ideas into actionable recommendations

·       The ability to think strategically and analytically

·       Ability to organise and prioritise multiple projects and deadlines with minimal oversight

·       Exemplary planning and administrative skills



·       Ability to generate and implement marketing initiatives

·       Confident and competent in a range of public speaking settings

·       Experience in church/ministry leadership

·       Understanding of the Australian social services sector

·       Experience in event management



·       A proven leader who can inspire, influence and deliver results.
