POSITION TITLE: Soul Cafe General Manager

LOCATION: Soul Cafe Newcastle NSW, Australia

HOURS OF DUTY: Full time plus reasonable additional hours to fulfil the requirements of the role.

DURATION: Fixed term of 12 months. The position beyond that period is contingent on an annual review and funding.

SALARY: Salary Package to be determined.

REPORTS TO: Soul Cafe Lifeshapers Family Services Trust.

Soul Café is a business name held by the charity Lifeshapers Family Services Trust ABN 67385398045. The Corporate Trustee for the charity is Life Church Ltd ABN36069609356. Soul Café is an expression of the churches mission to help the ‘least and the lost’.

Soul Café is ‘More than a Meal’

Soul Cafe provides hundreds of free meals per week to highly disadvantaged members of our community many of whom are homeless, have a mental illness, substance abuse issue or live in poverty. Our meals are simply the medium to be able to work with people in a greater way. We are not government funded, and based in Newcastle, Australia.

Soul Cafe is a Faith based Mission of Life Church.

The ultimate mission of Soul Cafe is to see vulnerable cafe guests placed on a path towards increased safety, health and purpose. We aim to lift a group of people that are less fortunate to a greater level of lifestyle within our community through a comprehensive approach that assists them to work through their individual issues and to re-engage back into society.

We believe this is ultimately best done through a relationship with Christ and so Faith in Christ is encouraged but not demanded of volunteers or guests.

As such this position requires that the General Manager has a practising faith that can be demonstrated through their interactions, values and lifestyle. Our approach is practical, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. Every life has a story and is of value. We serve all with dignity, respect and without judgement.

About the Role:

The primary purpose of the role is to coordinate the day to day operations of Soul Café including the oversight of staff and volunteers, building and maintaining a healthy culture throughout the charity and between the church and charity. The relationship with church and charity should always be strengthened.

This purpose includes networking/fostering positive working relationships within the local community and business networks to raise the profile of Soul and build partnerships with the aim of enhancing Soul’s capacity to serve the vulnerable and needy.


Key Responsibilities:

The General Manager must outwork the key responsibilities of the position in a manner that is compatible with the Christian Faith and Culture.

A.    Responsible for all aspects of service delivery, ensuring quality service provision occurs in accordance with relevant legislation and Soul Cafe policy frameworks. Including meal service, guest programs and support services and volunteer recruitment, training and management.

·       Responsible for maintaining and building on the organisation’s positive culture and approach to service delivery.

·       Responsible for maintaining and building the organisation’s volunteer teams and team leaders.

·       Responsible for staff supervision maintaining and building on the organisations positive staff team culture and performance.

·       Ensure the service is represented at relevant local and regional forums and networks.


B.    Responsible for the administration of the organisation’s administrative systems, as per the requirements of legislation, regulatory bodies, the charity trustees and the policies and procedures of the organisation. Including,

·       A quarterly written service report being delivered in a timely manner to the Trustees.

·       Maintaining the organisation’s records.

·       Risk / incident management and the organisations WH&S Management Plan.


C.   Responsible for program expenditure, sponsor and grant partnerships and the leadership of Soul fundraising activities.

·       Responsible for program expenditure ensuring its alignment with budgetary expectations.

·       Responsible for accurate financial reports being delivered in a timely manner to the Trustees.

·       Responsible for donor, sponsor and grant partnerships.

·       Responsible for leading Soul fundraising activities.


Perform other duties relevant to Soul Cafes service as directed by the Board of Trustees.


Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

A.    Can demonstrate a practising Christian faith in interactions with others, values and lifestyle.

B.    Demonstrated experience in service delivery to those with addictions, mental health disorders and other social and economic challenges. Including a capacity to de-escalate challenging behaviours associated with addiction and poor mental health.

C.   Demonstrated experience in leadership in the not for profit sector including the capacity to lead volunteers according to organisational values and culture.

D.   Demonstrated experience in supervision staff.

E.    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that can be appropriately used when working with, staff, volunteers, government departments and community organisations.

F.    Demonstrated ability to contribute to the planning, monitoring and evaluation of service delivery.

G.   Demonstrated experience in grant and fundraising activities.


General Requirements:

1.    Competent literacy and computer skills.

2.    Ability to work with minimal direction and supervision.

3.    Excellent time management skills.

4.    Enthusiasm, energy and interpersonal skills.

5.    Appropriate tertiary qualifications (Diploma or above) and / or demonstrated superior experience relevant to this position.
