Honorary Legal Advisor – Baptist Union of Victoria


The BUV is currently seeking applications for the role of Honorary Legal Advisor. This role is a member of the Union Council and as such is elected by the Assembly on the nomination of Union Council.


What is the role?


The role of the Honorary Legal Advisor includes:


·       Providing general legal insight into issues raised at Union Council.

·       Providing Union Council with legal advice where possible.

·       Providing senior executives with responses to legal issues where possible.

·       Suggesting suitable legal advisors to answer specialised legal questions.

·       Chairing the Constitutional Review Committee and reviewing and advising on BUV related Constitutions (including Churches).


Who do we need?


We are seeking a senior lawyer with broad based legal experience who has been in practice or involved in the law for a considerable time. A lawyer with commercial background would be best suited – however a litigation lawyer with business experience (eg as a managing partner etc) may also suit.


What is the time commitment?


Union Council meets in the evening on the 4th Tuesday of each month. The Legal Advisor must also be available to respond in a timely manner to emails and phone calls from the Union office as required.



What does the Constitution say?


According to the BUV Constitution, a person may only be elected as Honorary Legal Advisor if:


·       the person is a member of a Constituent Church, in good standing with the Church and involved in the mission of the Church, in the opinion of Council; and

·       the person has affirmed the Doctrinal Basis of the Union and Principles and Ideals of the Baptist Faith; and

·       the person is personally living a life fulfilling the qualifications of a faithful Church leader as described in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4, in the opinion of the Council; and

·       the person believes that he or she has adequate time to devote attention to the affairs of the BUV; and

·       the person believes that he or she is free from significant conflicts of interests that cannot be mitigated; and

·       the person is not disqualified from being a Council Member under the Corporations Act or the ACNC Act; and

·       the person has given their signed consent to be a Council Member; and

·       the person is suitably skilled for the position; and

·       the person has been nominated by Council.
